Q: What is a Labradoodle? A: The Labradoodle was first bred in Australia as a Guide Dog for people with allergies in the 1970s. Wally Cochran is the person credited with their initial development during the 1980s. Television coverage of this new breed of dog; created a large response from the general public and several dog breeders started breeding the Labradoodle commercially. Labradoodle's gained popularity for their fluffy coats with little to no shedding. Labradoodles are the result of breeding Labrador Retreivers to Standard Poodles. | Q: F1/F1B/Multigeneration?
A: There are many things to consider when looking at Labradoodles and most people don't realize there is a difference between the types of Labradoodles you can buy. Many puppy mills and first time breeders will simply breed an average Labrador Retriever to a Standard poodle and sell them as F1 (First Generation) Labradoodles. It is extremely hard to tell what you will get with an F1 Labradoodle. You could get a puppy that ranges anywhere from Lab to Labradoodle to poodle as far as coat, temperament, and shape go. Generally, F1 Labradoodles will shed and do not have the non-allergenic qualities most people are looking for. F1b (First Generation Cross-back) Labradoodles are the result of breeding the pick of the litter F1 Labroodle back to a Standard Poodle. This where the Labradoodle picks up more of its non-shedding and non-allergenic qualities. Our girl, Emmie is a Standard F1b American Labradoodle. Multigeneration Labradoodles are considered to be the “True” Labradoodle and is the result of careful breeding of pick of the litter F1/F1b/F2 labradoodles to produce an amazing dog. Multigeneration labradoodles will have a “teddy bear” look and wavy hair. They are non-shedding and non-allergenic. Multigens are smart, witty, playful dogs with amazing personalities. Truly a one-of-a-kind breed.
| Q: What kind of tempermant do Labradoodles have? A: Variously described as confident, clever, loving and loveable, vivacious, loyal, affectionate, joyful, sociable, friendly, comical, intuitive, totally non-aggressive and devoted they clearly have everything going for them! They are excellent with children, love water (both Labradors and Poodles are descended from hunting dogs bred to work in water – the Labrador from the St. John’s Newfoundland and the Poodle from the pan-European Water Spaniel) and are natural swimmers. | Q: What I should know about my puppy? A: As puppies they are adaptable, remarkably unstressed and just seem to take new things in their stride. They do not like being left on their own for long lengths of time and feel rejection keenly while craving contact with their ‘family’. They can easily become bored and must have sustained, structured training in their early life, to which they will respond with an eagerness to please and a high level of intelligence and ‘trainability’. | Q: What if I have more questions?
